China's Light Truck Market Grows 7% to 172,000 Units in May

June 22,2026

China's light truck market returned to year-on-year growth in May 2026, with sales rising 7% to 172,000 units, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). However, the growth rate was six percentage points lower than that of the overall truck market.

The segment, which includes light-duty trucks, mini trucks and pickup trucks, remains the largest category within China's commercial vehicle industry. The rebound follows a 2% decline recorded in April and marking a return to positive year-on-year growth after April's decline despite slower growth than the overall truck sector.

Market Recovery Continues

China's truck market sold 323,500 units in May, up 11% from the same period last year, although sales were 6% lower than in April.

Light truck sales totaled 172,000 units, representing a 7% year-on-year increase and a 3% month-on-month decline. While the market softened slightly from April levels, demand remained relatively strong compared with historical trends.

Among the major truck segments, medium-duty trucks recorded the fastest growth, with sales increasing 74% year-on-year. Heavy-duty truck sales rose 23%, while mini trucks were the only segment to post a decline, falling 18%.

For the first five months of 2026, China's light truck market reached cumulative sales of 862,200 units, down 1% year-on-year. However, the decline narrowed compared with earlier months, indicating a gradual recovery in market demand.

Industry statistics show that May 2026 delivered one of the strongest performances of the past decade. The month's sales volume ranked as the third-highest May result in the last ten years, reflecting the resilience of the light truck sector despite a challenging market environment.

Foton Retains Leadership

Competition among leading manufacturers remained intense in May, with eight companies exceeding monthly sales of 10,000 units.

Foton remained the market leader, selling 36,000 units and securing a 20.9% market share. The company remained the only manufacturer to account for more than one-fifth of total light truck sales during the month.

Dongfeng ranked second with 17,500 units sold and a market share of 10.2%.

Farizon delivered one of the month's most notable performances, climbing to third place with sales of 14,900 units and an 8.7% market share. The result marked the first time the Geely-owned commercial vehicle brand entered the top three in China's monthly light truck sales rankings.

JAC Motors, Great Wall Motors, Changan Automobile, JMC and Yuejin completed the next five positions, with each manufacturer recording sales above 10,000 units.

The top ten manufacturers together accounted for 84% of total market volume, while the top five brands represented more than 56% of all light truck sales in May. The top ten manufacturers together accounted for 84% of total market volume, while the top five brands represented 56.3% of sales in May.

Farizon and Yuejin Gain Ground

Among them, Yuejin posted the strongest growth, with sales increasing by more than 40% compared with May 2025. In contrast, several competitors recorded double-digit declines, with the weakest performer seeing sales fall by as much as 36%.

Compared with April, the composition of the top ten manufacturers remained unchanged, but rankings shifted noticeably. Farizon rose two places to third, while JAC moved up to fourth position.

Market Share Gains for Dongfeng, Farizon and Yuejin

During the January-May period, Foton remained the clear market leader with cumulative sales of 197,500 units and a market share of 22.9%.

Dongfeng, JAC and Great Wall held the second, third and fourth positions, each exceeding 70,000 units in cumulative sales.

Changan, JMC and Farizon ranked fifth through seventh, with cumulative sales exceeding 55,000 units each. Yuejin, Sinotruk and Shineray completed the top ten, each selling more than 25,000 units during the first five months of the year.

Farizon continued to strengthen its market position, ranking seventh with cumulative sales exceeding 55,000 units. The company also recorded one of the strongest market-share gains in the industry.

Compared with the same period in 2025, Dongfeng increased its market share by 1.6 percentage points, followed by Farizon with a gain of 1.1 percentage points and Yuejin with an increase of 1.0 percentage point. Foton and JMC also expanded their market shares by 0.7 and 0.2 percentage points, respectively.

Although cumulative light truck sales remained slightly below last year's level through May, the market has moved significantly closer to recovery.

The year-to-date decline narrowed to just 1%, compared with a larger contraction earlier in the year. With the year-to-date decline narrowing to just 1%, industry observers will closely watch June's performance to see whether the market can return to positive cumulative growth.
