Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturer Foton launched its new light-duty truck, the Truck Mate, in Johannesburg on June 25, aiming to strengthen its presence in the South African market and address growing demand for affordable and reliable transport solutions.

The Truck Mate is tailored for urban logistics and small business needs, featuring a 1.5-liter engine and a 7-cubic-meter cargo box. The model is part of Foton’s broader strategy to expand its product offerings across Africa, with a focus on local production and service capabilities.

The launch event also showcased several of Foton’s existing models available in South Africa, including the MILER truck series, VIEW vans, the TUNLAND G7 pickup, and the fully electric eVIEW VAN. The event drew local dealers, key clients, and media, highlighting continued interest in the brand’s commercial offerings.

“Foton remains committed to long-term investment in Africa,” said Jiang Yanlei, vice president of Foton’s overseas business unit. “We will focus on growing our product range, boosting local assembly, improving service networks, and advancing R&D capabilities to better serve regional markets.”

Jiang also emphasized the company’s use of KD (knock-down) assembly operations in South Africa, which supports local job creation and industrial development.

Foton entered the South African market with a long-term growth strategy and has gradually expanded its footprint through a diverse product line and localized services. The Truck Mate is positioned as a cost-effective, practical option for businesses involved in city distribution and last-mile delivery.

Alongside the Truck Mate, the MILER series continues to serve construction, agriculture, and transportation sectors with high load capacity and reliability. The TUNLAND G7 has found success across several African countries for its off-road performance, while the eVIEW VAN offers a zero-emission solution for urban logistics.

Since introducing its “Africa Strategy” and “Lighthouse Plan” in 2024, Foton has increased its efforts in local manufacturing, green technologies, and supply chain development. The company reports that it has created over 1,000 jobs in South Africa and contributed to the growth of supporting industries.

The launch of the Truck Mate reinforces Foton’s commitment to local production and market development, positioning the company as an emerging player in the African commercial vehicle sector.
