India government has launched the country’s first national incentive program specifically aimed at electric trucks. Under the PM E‑DRIVE initiative, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has earmarked ₹500 crore (about €50 million) to support the deployment of approximately 5,600 electric heavy‑duty trucks during the financial year April 2025 to March 2026.

Under the scheme, eligible trucks in the N2 and N3 categories (from 3.5 to up to 55 tonnes GVW) can receive a purchase subsidy calculated as the lowest of:

₹5,000 per kWh of battery capacity

10% of the ex-factory price (excluding trailers)

A capped subsidy ranging between ₹2.7 lakh and ₹9.6 lakh, based on gross vehicle weight

A dedicated fund of ₹100 crore is reserved for 1,100 electric trucks registered in Delhi, supporting the national capital’s urgent need to curb harmful emissions.

To qualify, vehicles must comply with local manufacturing requirements under India’s Make in India initiative. Eligible models must use domestically produced components such as battery packs, traction motors, and vehicle control units. From March 2026 onward, even deeper localization standards—such as including the battery management system—will be enforced.

The scheme also mandates robust manufacturer warranties: 5 years or 500,000 km for batteries, and 5 years or 250,000 km for motors and vehicle components.

Transport Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy noted diesel trucks make up just 3% of India’s vehicle population but contribute 42% of transport sector emissions, underscoring the importance of cleaner alternatives. A state-owned steel producer, SAIL, has pledged to procure 150 electric trucks as part of its efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Environmental and logistics experts say the program could tip the economics of fleet electrification in India. While electric trucks currently cost more upfront than diesel counterparts, long-term cost savings and subsidies under this scheme may narrow the total cost-of-ownership gap. Industries such as cement, steel, ports and logistics operators are among early adopters piloting e-truck deployments.

With over 70% of freight transported by road in India, e-truck adoption could both cut emissions and improve energy efficiency. Analysts expect the PM E‑DRIVE incentives to accelerate the country’s transition toward cleaner freight transportation.
