FTXT Energy Launches Hydrogen Truck Testing in Brazil

August 21,2025

Great Wall Motor officially opened its new plant in Brazil on August 16, with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, Chinese Ambassador Zhu Qingqiao, Labor Minister, and company executives in attendance.

At the event, FTXT Energy Tech unveiled a hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck featuring its core hydrogen system. The truck will soon begin road testing in Brazil in collaboration with the University of São Paulo (USP) and other local institutions.

The tests will focus on three main areas:

Assessing the hydrogen system’s performance under Brazil’s diverse conditions, including temperature, altitude, road types, and driving habits.

Evaluating the trucks’ compatibility with different hydrogen sources, such as green hydrogen and ethanol-based hydrogen, in the context of Brazil’s energy mix and transport infrastructure.

Collecting local driving data to guide product improvements and determine commercial feasibility.

The project also aims to foster knowledge sharing with local universities, strengthening Brazil’s hydrogen technology capabilities and paving the way for commercial deployment of hydrogen trucks.

This initiative began in 2023, when Great Wall Motor signed a memorandum of understanding with the São Paulo state government to explore hydrogen applications. By 2024, the company had advanced five hydrogen refueling projects in Brazil. In November 2024, FTXT Energy Tech signed an agreement with the Minas Gerais state government and the Federal University of Itajubá (Unifei) to further develop green hydrogen trucks and associated infrastructure.

As part of Great Wall Motor Group’s global new energy strategy, FTXT Energy Tech is bringing its hydrogen expertise overseas. The Brazil testing program has been recognized by the local government as a key energy transition project, marking a significant milestone for Chinese hydrogen truck technology in South America.

Beyond trucks, FTXT Energy Tech is collaborating with Brazilian partners on hydrogen-powered ships and combined heat-and-power projects. These initiatives aim to expand hydrogen applications from individual vehicles to a full “production–storage–transport–use” ecosystem, creating synergies between transport and energy, accelerating Brazil’s hydrogen industry, and highlighting the global competitiveness of Chinese technology.
