In June 2024, Gong Yueqiong made a surprising career move. The former Vice President of BAIC Group and Chairman of Beijing Hyundai joined Chery Automobile as General Manager of Chery Commercial Vehicles.

Since his arrival, Chery Commercial Vehicles has seen strong momentum. In 2024, its light commercial vehicle sales grew 20% year-on-year, ranking among the industry leaders. Sales of its new energy mini-trucks soared 307%, securing the second spot nationwide.

At the Chery Commercial Vehicles 2025 Partner Conference on December 31, 2024, Chery Chairman Yin Tongyue outlined ambitious targets for the company’s future:

2025–2026: annual sales of 300,000 units

2027–2028: 600,000 units, aiming to lead the domestic market and expand into Europe

2029–2030: over 1 million units, positioning Chery as a top global commercial vehicle brand

Chery’s vision extends well beyond China. By 2030, the company plans for overseas sales to account for 40% of heavy trucks, 62% of pickups, 77% of vans, 35% of light commercial vehicles, and 62% of buses.

Gong’s move from BAIC to Chery initially raised eyebrows. At BAIC, he already held top roles, but the company’s new energy business was struggling, and joint ventures faced shrinking profits in a crowded market. Chery, with its more open and flexible structure, offered him a better platform to leverage his experience.

Gong started his career at BAIC in 2004 and spent 17 years at Foton, building deep expertise in commercial vehicles. With a degree in economics and a certified accountant qualification, he is well-equipped to guide Chery through its current phase of cost-efficient growth.

After just one year at Chery, Gong has already delivered remarkable results. Whether he can truly steer Chery Commercial Vehicles to become the world’s No.1 new energy commercial vehicle brand remains to be seen.
