FOTON Boosts Local Manufacturing in South Africa

November 21,2025

FOTON Motor is ramping up its presence in South Africa, expanding local manufacturing and strengthening industrial ties between Africa and China.

The G20 Summit will take place in Johannesburg on November 22–23 under the theme “Unity, Equity, Sustainability.” These priorities reflect global development goals and closely align with Africa’s industrial growth. As the first African country to chair the G20 and the only African member outside the African Union, South Africa is embracing a historic opportunity to boost regional cooperation.

Against this backdrop, FOTON is reinforcing its commitment to “growing with Africa” by investing in local production and industry development.

Building a Strong Local Manufacturing Base

Since launching its Africa strategy and the “Lighthouse Program,” FOTON has steadily expanded its operations in South Africa. Its Port Elizabeth plant, the BAIC Group’s first overseas vehicle manufacturing facility, represents the largest automotive investment in South Africa in nearly 40 years, with $226 million invested across a 540,000-square-meter site.

On March 17, 2025, FOTON rolled out its first locally-made heavy-duty AMT truck, marking a milestone in heavy truck production. This was followed on September 30 by the first locally assembled CKD pickup.

These achievements demonstrate FOTON’s growing production capabilities and its development of a full-scale local manufacturing system covering light trucks, heavy trucks, and pickups. This strong foundation enables FOTON to better serve the African market.

By integrating R&D, manufacturing, sales, service, and parts supply locally, FOTON is moving beyond “selling products” to actively supporting industrial growth, helping strengthen regional supply chains and upgrade South Africa’s automotive sector.

Deep Local Integration for Shared Growth

FOTON views local integration as key to its success in Africa. The Port Elizabeth plant combines SKD production for heavy trucks and CKD assembly for pickups, working closely with local partners to optimize the supply chain and respond quickly to market demands.

FOTON’s locally-made trucks and pickups are tailored to African needs. Heavy trucks are designed for mining logistics and port operations, offering powerful engines and smart controls for tough work. Pickups provide versatile, reliable options for everyday use. These vehicles truly reflect “Made in Africa for African needs.”

Green Technology for a Low-Carbon Future

With the G20 focusing on fair energy transitions and climate financing, FOTON is advancing its green strategy in South Africa and across Africa with an “ICE + BEV” dual-technology approach.

Since 2024, FOTON South Africa has introduced electric models including the eAUMARK light truck, eVIEW delivery vehicle, and eTruck Mate, creating a zero-emission product lineup for urban logistics and last-mile delivery. Local production of heavy trucks and pickups also lays the groundwork for future electric commercial vehicles, highlighting FOTON’s capability to provide full-scenario “ICE + BEV” solutions.

These initiatives support Africa’s energy optimization and emission reduction goals while offering a replicable “China solution,” showcasing successful Sino-African cooperation in sustainable development.

Looking Ahead: Driving Africa-China Industrial Collaboration

As the G20 emphasizes global unity and sustainability, FOTON is using South Africa as a strategic hub and local manufacturing as a core driver. Through technology, talent development, and green transformation, FOTON is playing an active role in Africa’s industrialization.

Looking forward, FOTON will continue the Lighthouse Program, partnering with South African and African stakeholders to advance the commercial vehicle industry toward smarter, greener, and higher-end solutions—writing a new chapter in Africa-China collaboration.
